Right of way- ambulance

When the VIPs pass, all traffic is halted for hours together.
Some celebrations cause traffic to be diverted or halted or blocked.
But when an ambulance waits at the signal, stuck behind waiting vehicles, I have never seen the traffic police allow that lane a green signal so that the ambulance gets a clear passage.
Why?

Oh yeah ! This one's a bummer. But I'll have you know I once thwarted a bloody useless string of VIP cars trying to come from Adyar on the wrong side towards airport . And all because I had already turned right and had humungous onyx truck behind me that had no space to manouevre. I loved the look in the eyes of the bozos when they had to inch back all the way to Krishna Sweets and let me and the filthy onyx truck go by. I don't envy the cop on duty that day at Madhya Kailash .

And yeah , on Santhome road, at 9 AM rush hour, the high court judges zip by with lights against oncoming traffic. For what ? to go and judge over cases languishing for 20 years. Whereas I have to get to a conf call with my client at 9.30 AM . Life sucks - at least driving on the roads does !

Yup... that's exactly what I was wondering the other day, stuck at the traffic signal with a screaming ambulance right behind the bus I was in. Lives are at stake here - but who'll understand?

so very true! And the worst are the other dirvers/cars on the road who take advantage of the clearance made by sensible people to give way to the ambulance.

Those kind of people are the worst!

In the US it's a given that anything with a siren going gets the right of way. You just pull over to the right at the first opportunity you can. Most of our traffic lights are fitted with a sensor that something on the police, ambulance, and fire trucks trip which turn the light green allowing them quicker passage and better opportunity for traffic to get out of their way. In India it seems that it is every driver for themselves on the road and very little order seems to exist.

I always wonder about it every time I visit India. The traffic police should constantly run TV campaigns to educate people on road ( common ) sense. If they cant do anything about a ministers car, the least people can do is give way to emergency services vehicles.

Good envirnment friendly tips on your last post :-)

lumi- now that is something that India needs desperately. but only on fire engins and ambulances and select police/ minister cars.. not the entire lot of them!!!
NM- those trolls must be shot!
